The State Library on Berlin’s bustling Unter den Linden boulevard is the largest academic research library in Germany. The renovation of the 100-year-old building started in 2004 and is expected to be completed by the middle of 2017.
The renovation is an engineering and logistical challenge, in the first phase of which Bolidt installed 20,000 m2 of sound-absorbing, dust-repellent and fire-resistant Bolidt flooring.
The imposing building houses a vast collection of invaluable items, including the main autograph collection of Goethe, original manuscripts by Einstein and about 66,000 handwritten scores by composers such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. To preserve the collection, a damp-proof and dust-tight bunker with 4,000 m2 of floor surface spread over two floors is built underneath the building.
These floors were finished with the Bolidtop® 525 flooring system, which is known for its versatility in colour and high wear resistance and has a seamless surface that is easy to clean. This type of Bolidt flooring is also installed in the corridors and the foyer of the building.
The reverberant noise in the high library halls needed to be reduced to create a quiet and peaceful environment. In order to provide a solution that would meet the acoustic requirements, Bolidt developed a special floor minimising airborne and impact noise such as voices and footsteps. The flooring also complies with the most stringent European fire safety standards.
The Bolidtop® FiftyFifty in the central reading room proves that Bolidtop® is a seamless aesthetic fit with the original parquet and natural stone flooring. Together with Bolidt’s creative lab Bolidroom®, architectural firm H.G. Merz designed a special cloud pattern in two contrasting colours for this area. The room is flooded in natural light, which is regulated by its translucent shell. It is a light, open space literally allowing room for contemplation, concentration and reflection.Request a brochure
