Safe decking for the world's largest
    and strongest crane vessel

Bolidt News

sleipnir

With a length of 220 metres and a width of over 100 metres, the Sleipnir is the largest and strongest semi-submersible crane vessel (SSCV) in the world. The enormous vessel was built for Heerema by Sembcorp Marine and has two revolving cranes that can lift loads of up to 20,000 tonnes in tandem. No other existing crane vessel has this capability. The Sleipnir is deployed by Heerema on offshore oil, gas, and renewable energy installation and decommissioning projects. Bolidt contributed by installing the attractive interior decking on site in Singapore.

8 legged stallion

Construction of the Sleipnir – named after the Norse God Odin’s 8 legged stallion – began in 2016 at the Tuas Boulevard Yard of Singaporean marine and offshore engineering group Sembcorp Marine. At the peak of construction, the yard employed no less than 3,500 people to ensure that Heerema Marine Contractors’ ground-breaking vessel was delivered on time. In addition to the two heaviest offshore cranes ever built, supplied by Schiedam crane builder Huisman, the vessel is equipped with all kinds of facilities to comfortably accommodate its crew.

Specialist in decking systems

An important element in the construction of the Sleipnir is the interior decking that was produced by Bolidt and installed on site in Singapore by its own specialised application teams. With over 50 years of experience, Bolidt is a true specialist in decking systems for, for instance, naval vessels and cruise ships. It knows like no other that safety is always a priority on the water.

The decking systems from the Bolideck® series used on the Sleipnir are therefore not only extremely strong and durable, but also slip resistant to minimise the risk of slips and falls.

Design freedom and safety

Bolideck® systems offer virtually unlimited possibilities when it comes to colour, pattern and application. This creates a great deal of design freedom, as can be seen, for example, in the striking use of the Heerema logo in the Bolideck® Future Teak flooring system. The flooring in the large gym also features the Heerema logo, as well as an abundance of field markings. The design freedom actually serves more than just an aesthetic purpose. It also contributes to safety on board. With the corridors on each deck of the Sleipnir having a different coloured ‘runner’ incorporated into the flooring, the crew always know which deck they are on.

Durable and easy to maintain

Life on board of a crane vessel often continues 24 hours a day. That is why every effort has been made to make the crew as comfortable as possible. The flooring in the galley, corridors, restaurant, control rooms, wash and storage rooms etc provides the spaces with their own distinctive character and the sound absorbing effect of the flooring makes a positive contribution to a comfortable living and working environment. Maintenance and durability are also important aspects, of course. The installed seamless decking systems are hygienic, due to their non-porous nature. Since they are durable and very easy to maintain, the everyday heavy foot traffic from the 400 Sleipnir crew is no problem at all!
