At Bolidt, we pride ourselves on making design dreams come true. Our specialty is bringing imaginings of the mind into reality. When an architect has an innovative concept or an out-of-the-box idea, they bring it to us. We are the ‘enablers’, we translate their concept into a living and breathing reality. Whether it be a floor or a deck design, functionality is guaranteed whilst the aesthetics are unlimited.
The Bolidream is where the magic happens. Here, we can develop new materials and work alongside designers to realize their wildest dreams. Following is a glimpse of some of the projects that we’ve had the privilege of shaping into reality.
The Winton Gallery opened in December 2016, offering visitors a chance to explore mathematics in a completely new way. The London Science Museum gallery exhibits mathematics from top to bottom, literally. Tools, ideas, and people are vividly explored, whilst the exhibition space itself exuberates intricate mathematical precision. In the center of the gallery is an aircraft hanging in mid-air. The room follows the curvature produced by the calculated airflow of this plane. The results are stunning.
The project was headed by Zaha Hadid Architects, who worked closely alongside Bolidt in designing a floor that would accompany such an intricate, ambitious project. The floor displays perfectly precise indications of airflow, with a smoothness that compliments the overall flow of the gallery. This only possible with Bolidt’s team of specialists applying it on site.
Texelstroom is a ferry that provides transport between Den Helder and the island of Texel in the Netherlands.
This was a particularly challenging and rewarding project that tested the versatility of Bolidt flooring. Naval architects C-Job and design studio Vripack came together to create this fascinating design. The aim was to bring the ‘island experience’ on board the ship. Through intensive research and many visits to the island, the team captured the essence of Texel.
Vripack wanted a floor that would resemble running water and sand throughout the whole ship, as well as a colour scheme that mirrored the effect of water on sand. The lower in the ship, the darker the sand, and the higher in the ship, the lighter it gets. This was made possible with the versatility in design that Bolidt can offer. To be specific, Bolideck® Fifty Fifty was used to realise the concept, with two contrasting, closely related colours. To recreate the wet and dry sands of the Frisian islands, shades of dark and light brown were mixed and set into the floor.
Built to a design by Mecanoo Architects, Fontys Sports College in the Dutch city of Eindhoven has been nominated for several awards, including the Schools category of the World Architecture Festival awards. The interior design of the project, including a Bolidt flooring system, also features on the shortlist for an INSIDE Award in the Education category, and the building was nominated for the title of South Region BNA Building of the Year.
A special feature of this project is that Mecanoo has embedded the theme of sports throughout the entire school. Sporting figures are depicted on the outer façade and murals cover the interior walls. To build into this theme, the floors have been line marked, as if students are on a court or a racetrack. The intricate patterns of intersecting lines proved a complicated process for Bolidt, but the results are fantastic. Students are immersed in a reality where sports is the number one focus.
As you can see, we thrive on collaborating with all kinds of industries in all kinds of ways. It's what we do best. That's exactly the driving force behind our new Bolidt Innovation Center. It's a space for great minds to come together in the exploration and experimentation of synthetics. At the heart of the Innovation Center will be the Research & Development department, whose main task is realizing the innovations dreamed up through creative collaborations. To find out more about this exciting new development, check out the website. We look forward to sharing more amazing collaborations with you in the future!
