Top 3 reasons your bridge needs bolidt wear layers

Some of the oldest bridges in the world date back to the 13th century BC. Since then, the type of traffic which uses them has changed massively and so has the technology used to build them.

Bolidt is a specialist provider of synthetic wear layers for bridges and aqueducts all over the world. We’ve been leading the way in advancing technology for a long time for over half a century. In fact, it’s one of the cornerstones of our business which has seen us work with clients all over the world.

But why should you be partnering with us on your next project? Here are our top three reasons:

  • De Waalsprongbrug Nijmegen Bridgedeck UP

We have a wear layer perfect for every bridge

Every project is unique, requiring a bespoke solution. Our recommendations consider the two most important factors for any wear layer; underground and load/usage.

The Bolidt team has developed two unique systems to form the perfect base for our wear layers on any underground. We have the BoligripⓇ 1250 for steel bridge structures and BoligripⓇ W for concrete. Both are designed to meet the movement and load requirements of your structure, you can find out more about them here .

The load/usage which is intended for a wear layer will have a great impact on its specification. The wear layer of a car lane will be rougher and up to 5mm deep by comparison to one used for pedestrian or bicycle traffic which is up to 3mm deep, for example. There are often differences in aesthetics, with specific traffic types getting their own color of wear layer. That’s why Bolidt gives our clients a range of design options in our wear layer range.

Rapid Deployment

When it comes to installing a wear layer, the time it takes to apply is a central concern. If you’re maintaining an existing bridge, getting the job done quickly and effectively is a huge benefit.

At Bolidt we understand this, which is why we developed the BolimixⓇ wearing course machine. This innovative machine will allow you to apply up to 10,000 m2 of synthetic wearing course per day. It takes on most of the work, making the application nearly 100% automated.

The BolimixⓇ machine really came into its own when we worked with the Department of Public Works to apply an ultramodern wearing course to the Moerdijk Bridge outside Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. When finished, our wear layer lowered maintenance and enhanced road safety. This project had such great results that the Department of Public Works awarded Bolidt over 200,000 m2 of additional wear layer bridge projects. These included the Galecoper Bridge. If you’d like to know more about the  Moerdijk Bridge project, you can read more here.

We have over fifty years experience

Bolidt has been working on bridges across the world for over 50 years. Each bridge has inspired us to create new applications and systems which are as unique as the bridges themselves.

In addition to the Moerdijk bridge, you can see our work throughout Germany, protecting the breathtaking Erasmusbridge in The Netherlands and even as far away as the iconic Auckland bridge, New Zealand. So, when we say we have experience, we also have the portfolio to back it up.

If your bridge isn’t benefiting from our expertise we’d love to talk to you about changing that. To find out more, you can check out our page on bridges or speak to our bridges expert, Peter Staal.
