Whoever visits Utrecht Science Park simply cannot miss biotech company Genmab. Located just off the main road, the building was designed by cepezed and is strikingly clean in style and detailing. The interior houses offices, laboratories and supporting facilities, such as a conference centre, auditorium, science café and restaurant. Just like in het Hubrecht Institute on the Science Park, the more than 3,000 m2 of synthetic flooring was supplied and installed by Bolidt. In terms of sustainability, the new Genmab building achieved BREEAM Excellent certification.
Genmab is an internationally active, listed biotech company that develops antibody therapeutics for cancer. As the company has grown significantly in recent years, the need for new premises arose. Not just any new build, but a special design reflecting Genmab’s Scandinavian origins. The company also seized the opportunity presented by the move to enhance its visibility, increase interaction between employees and improve its ability to collaborate with external partners.
Appearance was important in the design, because the building had to convey a positive image with a view to attracting top researchers.
Most striking is its open plan design with large spans and long lines of sight. Aboveground, the building consists of two five-storey blocks. Positioned parallel to each other, with a slight outward shift, these blocks are linked by an attractive atrium.
Bolidt is by no means unknown to Delft based architectural practice cepezed. Regularly choosing Bolidt’s synthetic flooring systems for its designs, cepezed also designed the nearby Danone Innovation Centre and enlisted Bolidt’s expertise for the flooring. Architect Jan-Willem Visscher of cepezed explains why: “We always specify Bolidt as a supplier for projects involving flow applied or troweled flooring, because Bolidt consistently delivers quality, from consultation to installation and aftercare support.
Their high standard of product quality perfectly fits the level of quality we strive for in our architecture”. Accordingly, the comfortable and wear-resistant Bolidtop® 525 flooring system installed at Genmab seamlessly matches cepezed’s design.
Just like Genmab, Bolidt wants to use a new building to create more visibility and innovative possibilities for co-creation. It does so through the Bolidt Innovation Centre, which is currently under construction. As of summer 2019, anyone interested will be able to see researchers and product specialists at work in the lab here. The co-creation lab will enable business partners to create samples together with laboratory staff.
