Pillars Metro Rotterdam

The division of Bolidt that is concerned with civil and infrastructural works has done an exemplary job in Schiedam.

This time, Bolidt coated the 9 metre high pillars, over which the metro drives through the Rotterdam landscape. Due to a construction fault made in 1998 (the cylindrical reinforcement cage had been placed askew in the formwork), the preservation of the reinforcement steel could not be fully realized by the concrete. After this fault had been discovered, Intron formulated an advice by order of the Rotterdam public works department to compensate by means of a vapour-proof coating. With the consent of Bolidt, Intron determined the required layer thickness to preserve the concrete. The formulas that were used allow for the loss of its preservative function over the course of time.

Bolidt has prepared work and control plans based on the report made by Intron. The Rotterdam city council was closely associated with this project from start to finish. They tested the work methodology against the plans and Bolidt frequently carried out adhesion tests and work measurements in accordance with the QA plan.

A total of 21 pillars with an overall surface area of 1,500 m² have now been coated by Bolidt with Plycoat^® H, a one-component coating with a high content of elastic polymers. Project architect Maarten Struijs decided on the pale grey colour to maintain the impression of concrete pillars.

The city council has organized their own workmen to overcoat Plycoat^® H with an antigraffiti coating where necessary.
